Home Air Sealing Solutions in Southeast Michigan

Increase your home's comfort with the professional air sealing services we offer at Blanket Insulation Services. We specialize in using up-to-date technology and the latest techniques to ensure your home is properly sealed.

The benefits of air sealing are three-fold: you’ll be able to take advantage of a healthier indoor environment, increase overall comfort, and lower heating and cooling costs in the most cost-effective manner possible.

Since heat always tries to escape through the path of least resistance, it will try to sneak out through any holes, cracks, or gaps anywhere in the home. Our home energy audit and blower door test can accurately identify how much air is escaping your building envelope and find the leaks.

Blanket Insulation Services can locate and seal air leaks throughout the whole home, from the attic to the basement. If you're interested in having us diagnose your home with our comprehensive home energy audit and seal air leaks to improve home comfort, request a free estimate today!

Common Areas for Air Leaks in the Home

  • Wiring and plumbing gaps through ceilings, walls, and floors
  • Near chimney passes
  • Attic entry points, such as drop-down stairs, doors, and access hatches
  • Near fans and recessed lighting
  • Around exterior doors and windows
  • Holes, gaps, or cracks in plaster or drywall
  • Near electrical switches and outlets
  • Holes for sump pumps
  • Bathroom fans
  • Basement window leaks
  • Basement or crawl space rim joists

Insulation and Air Sealing Work Together

Air sealing or insulation alone doesn't provide enough resistance to minimize heat flow. Before any insulation installation, air sealing should always be performed.

With our wealth of experience, we have determined that air sealing the attic is the priority since this is where the largest amount of leakage can be found. The next targets are the basement and crawl spaces, as sealing these spaces removes one of the most significant points of cold air infiltration.

Spray foam insulation acts as an effective air sealant and can dramatically reduce air leaks, which is something that fiberglass and cellulose insulation cannot do alone. By getting air sealing and insulation upgrades from Blanket Insulation Services, you can save as much as 50% on your heating and cooling costs.

Air Sealing Upgrades Can Save You Money and Energy

At Blanket Insulation Services, our technicians can perform an additional blower door test once the air sealing has been completed. By demonstrating the lower leakage rating, you’ll be able to confirm that your home is more airtight and provides superior energy performance, significant savings, and greater comfort than before.

Air Sealing Strategies

Finding the Best Air Sealing Techniques and Materials for Your Home

With the visual inspection and blower door test complete, you should have a pretty good idea of how much impact leaks are having on your energy use and comfort. With so many leaks to plug, you're probably wondering where to start. Don't worry. Blanket Insulation Services has got you covered. We take a simple, common-sense approach to air sealing your home.

Important Areas of the House to Focus On

It's important to seal leaks in the attic first because this is where the most significant leakage occurs. Sealing basement and crawl space areas should be the next priority. Air sealing all these areas in your house eliminates a major source of cold air infiltration. After your attic and basement are taken care of, what remains is the conditioned space, the main living area of your house.

Are Caulking and Weather-Stripping Enough to Seal Leaks?

Caulking and weather-stripping are easy and effective air sealing techniques that can provide quick money-saving results. Caulk is typically used to seal cracks and openings around stationary door and window frames, and weather-stripping is used to seal moving objects such as operable doors and windows.

Caulking and weather-stripping can be used to solve obvious air leakage, but there are likely more cracks and openings around your house that you can't see. A home energy audit and blower door test can help identify all the areas where your home is losing energy.

Make Insulation Part of Your Air Sealing Project

To make the biggest impact on your home's comfort and energy efficiency, it's important to make sure that your home is properly insulated once air sealing is done. There are a variety of insulation options that offer insulating value as well as air sealing characteristics.

Foam insulation can be blown into walls, attic spaces, and between floor joists to insulate and reduce air leakage. Insulating spray foam can be used to seal air leaks around window and door frames and electrical and plumbing penetrations. If rigid foam insulation panels are used, spray foam, caulking, or foil tape can be applied between the panels to create a tight seal.

If you need to add more insulation inside your home's exterior walls, dense-packed cellulose provides air sealing characteristics to reduce air infiltration year round, therefore improving energy efficiency and comfort.

Blower Door Tests From Blanket Insulation Services

We Create Comfortable Homes by Fixing Leaky Ones

One of the quickest and most affordable energy-saving projects is to seal cracks and openings around your house, but you first have to find the leaks. Some air leakage is obvious because you can feel it, such as a draft around your window or under an exterior door, while other leaks are less obvious.

Air leakage can be contributing to your uncomfortable home and high energy bills. Before installing new energy-efficient windows or making other efficiency upgrades, we recommend having a blower door test performed during your home energy audit to determine exactly how your home is using and losing energy.

Benefits of Finding and Fixing Air Leaks

  • Less energy consumption and lower utility costs
  • Helps prevent moisture condensation problems
  • Reduces uncomfortable drafts caused by cold air leaking in from outside
  • Blower door tests help determine how much ventilation is needed to improve indoor air quality

How a Blower Door Test Works

A blower door test helps locate air leaks in a house and is typically performed before and after air sealing. A blower door uses a special fan that's mounted in the frame of an exterior door to pull air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. The pressure difference between the air inside and outside the house forces the outside air in through all cracks and openings.

While the fan is running, a technician will inspect each room for air leaks. A pressure gauge measures the pressure differences inside and outside the home, and an airflow manometer measures the airflow. The data provided by the blower door test allows the technician to quantify the amount of air leakage in your home as well as find any unsealed openings following air sealing work.

"Overall I gave 5 stars because not only did I learn so much about my home and the amount of heat/cold being lost, but I could tell that the owner and his team were enthusiastic and genuinely were out to do a great job. That's exactly what they did. You get what you pay for and it is refreshing to see a company not trying to make a quick buck. Every request I had was taken care of in a timely matter. "
